Weblog Assignment #4

Vice City- the next Grand Theft Auto

In the article ”Busjacking for Grownups” by Lev Grossman, the author point out that Vice City is popular because of many reasons. Vice City is set in a fictional version of Miami, circa 1986. The video games are not toys, they are sophisticated, so many grownups interest in them. The maker draw streets meticulously, it looks like our real world. In this game, you face problems are real-world problems. You can choose how to solve those problems. The story will be different and it depends on the choices you make. The video game also teaches us about right and wrong.

My opinion:
Almost every video game is full of violence. Some people think that we can release our pressure by killing people in the fictional world. I think that we can release our pressure through other ways. If people are spellbound by the plot, they perhaps can’t differentiate between real world and fictional world. Teenagers are in touch with violence frequently, it is not good for their personality. I think that too much violence is not good for everyone.

Tornado FAQ's

We can find a lot of information about tornados at this site. Tornados can appear from any direction, they move from southwest to northwest, or west to east. Tornados can last from several seconds to more than an hour. About one thousand tornadoes hit the U.S. yearly, and about 60 people were killed by tornados per year, on average. The tornado season in the U.S. is from late winter through mid summer. This site provide very detailed information about tornados.

My opinion:
Before I came to America, I have watched tornado news on TV. I know that tornados can destroy houses, pick up objects and carry them for miles. In Taiwan, there are many typhoons during every summer. Typhoons also can destroy houses and cause great damage. Typhoons are common in Taiwan, so I don’t afraid of them. Sometimes we can get a holiday because of typhoons. There is no tornado in Taiwan, so when I heard the tornado warning at first time, I was scared. Now I know much knowledge about tornados, so I think that I will not scared next time.

ALTERNATIVES TO MARRIAGE
Alternative to Marriage Project (AtMP) is a national nonprofit organization. The organization is not against marriage but they advocate for the equal rights of unmarried people. We can find many current statistics about unmarried people. A lot of interesting information, for example famous unmarried people and unmarried song lyrics, can be found at this site. AtMP is open to not only unmarried people but also married people.

My opinion:
According to the statistics, the number of unmarried people is increasing. More and more people believe that marriage is not necessary of their lives. Other peoples’ unsuccessful experience leads people to refuse marriage. There are many alternatives to marriage. The acceptance level to the society is also increasing. If people are married or not, is not other people’s business. People have the right to choose their lifestyle.

The existence of the death penalty is necessary. The death penalty is effective in deterring people from committing crimes. Most people dread the ending of life. If a person who wants to commit crimes thinks about the acceptance of punishment, maybe he will desist from doing bad things. If people don’t have internal controls, the external controls are necessary to help them control themselves. The death penalty is one way to give the victims and their family comfort. The victims and their family surely feel sad and are angry with the criminals. It is not fair to the victims if the criminals are not punished. The existence of the death penalty can help to keep the peace of society and protect its citizens, so we should not abolish it.

SUSPECTS IN FIVE BURGLARIES ARRESTED

Enter the site, we can see two mugshots. The two men were suspected of burglarizing five separate businesses in Carbondle. They were arrested by Carbondle police. All of the five incidents were similar. The five businesses had glass on the front door that had be broken to gain entrance, and they were at Carbondle east side. The two suspects, one was transported to jail and the other was charged and will be given a court date.

My opinion:
According to a report by FBI in the United States, burglary is the most common of crimes. The crime rate of Carbondle is not very high, but crimes happened around us possibly. We should take notice of strange people around us, and take care ourselves. We should tell the police if we find strange people, and help the police to arrest suspects.

Carbondale police shoot, kill man (1-30-07), Southern Illinoisan article, 70 comments

The suspect shot and killed by a Carbondale police. The suspect is Lawrance Wirth, 22 of Carbondale. He was restraining and stabbing another man when three police officers arrived. The police chief said police are well trained in the use of firearms and appropriate use of deadly force. Most people think the police can not killed the man, but some people think the police took the correct action.

My opinion:
1. It is difficult to make a definition of “appropriate”.
2. The police can shoot the suspect, but can not kill him.
3. During violent confrontation, everything is not easy to control. The police maybe not want to kill the suspect.
4. People who commit crimes, they should risk losing their lives.
